Preparing Yourself Before Your LASIK | Shinagawa Blog

Preparing Yourself Before Your LASIK

LASIK doesn’t begin or end on the day of the procedure. There are things you need to do beforehand to make sure your LASIK journey goes smoothly.

You can learn more about what you need to do during a LASIK consultation at Shinagawa as you will properly be oriented but here are some easy things you can do personally to prepare before your procedure.

Arrange a Ride

You will not be able to drive the same day you get LASIK, especially after the procedure. Your vision may improve the same day but you still can’t drive.

It’s likely that your vision may be blurry for a few hours or the next day as they adjust. Because of this, you need to have a plan for how you’ll get home.

Ask a family member or friend that you trust to accompany you and drive you home after the procedure. If all else fails, you can always get a taxi or use Grab to get home.

The procedure only lasts around 10 minutes. But keep in mind there is some prep time before and a brief resting period before you can leave.

Your ride should not have to wait long. You should be okay to drive short distances after 24 hours.

If your vision has not cleared up by then, just give it a little more time. Everyone’s eyes recover on their own timeline.

Prepare for Your Recovery

As you start to recover from LASIK, you will be limited to what you can and cannot do. This is to protect your eyes, as they will be quite fragile and prone to infection.

Know that you cannot do any heavy lifting for several days to a few weeks after the procedure. You may have to make an arrangement at your place of work while you heal.

Depending on when you have LASIK, you may need to take a few days off from work to have LASIK and recover. Plan some light activities to get you through the day.

Make sure to plot out plenty of time to rest, as you will be quite tired after the surgery. Do your best to avoid using anything with screens for the first day or two to give your eyes enough time to rest.

Stop Wearing Contacts

You will need to stop wearing your contacts for several weeks (at least two) before your LASIK screening and surgery. This is because contacts can actually change the shape of your corneas and that may give inaccurate screening results.

Remember that you’ll only have to get reacquainted with your glasses for a few weeks and then you’ll finally be able to see without glasses and contacts after LASIK! It makes it all worth it.

The Day Before Procedure

The day before your procedure will be the most restrictive before recovery begins. You will not be able to have anything on your face, including makeup, lotions, and perfumes.

You can eat and drink, as usual, just avoid alcohol and medications that cause drowsiness. You should also avoid smoking on your surgical date.

Wear comfortable clothing, as you will need to be able to lay still for several minutes while the lasers are active. You should avoid fabrics that shed loose fibers or animal hair.

It may be a good idea to wear a few layers like a t-shirt, leggings, and a comfortable hoodie. Think about clothes that you can wear and easily nap in once you get home after the procedure.

You should arrive at the clinic early to ask questions and fill out any last-minute paperwork. Make sure to ask any questions you may have as well.

Going Beyond LASIK For Vision Correction | Shinagawa Blog

Going Beyond LASIK For Vision Correction LASIK

At Shinagawa, we are determined to find the best vision correction option for you using our advanced Comprehensive Eye Screening.

LASIK is certainly a popular choice and we take pride in performing it to countless people, but it’s not the right one for every patient. So, let us tell you more about LASIK alternatives in case a patient doesn’t qualify for it.

Our top eye doctors have hands-on experience with a wide range of vision correction procedures. Implantable Contact Lens (ICL), PRK, and Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) are wonderful alternatives for LASIK.

LASIK Alternatives

At Shinagawa, we offer a range of refractive options for vision correction. Depending on your individual needs and goals, one of these vision correction procedures could be perfect for you:

1. Implantable Contact Lens (ICL)

Implantable Contact Lens (ICL) offers many benefits, especially for patients who cannot have LASIK surgery due to a high level of myopia (nearsightedness), thin corneas or dry eye. ICL does not cause Dry Eye Syndrome, which can sometimes be a concern with LASIK. ICL also offers UV protection and has a superb patient satisfaction rate.

ICL is implanted behind the iris, in front of your eye’s natural lens during an approximately 20–30-minute procedure. You can expect quick vision improvement with minimal recovery time, and you will not be able to see or feel it once it is inserted. Unlike LASIK, which permanently changes the shape of the cornea, ICL is an additive technology that can be removed, if needed.

2. Photo-Refractive Keratectomy (PRK)

Photo-Refractive Keratectomy (PRK) is a laser vision correction surgery in which an outer layer of the surface of the eye is removed in order to avoid an incision in the cornea. Like LASIK, a laser is then used to ablate the cornea in order to correct refractive errors. Visual improvement and recovery time may take a bit longer than LASIK eye surgery or ICL lens implantation procedures but is still a great option for many people.

PRK may be an option for patients who cannot have LASIK surgery due to thin corneas but can only correct nearsightedness with a prescription up to -8 D. Ideal candidates for PRK are over 18 and have had a stable prescription for at least one year.

3. Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE)

Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) is a vision correction surgery in which the eye’s natural lens is replaced with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL), just like cataract surgery. RLE can correct a range of vision errors depending on the type of IOL that is chosen.

This procedure is identical to cataract surgery and is typically performed on one eye at a time.

Choosing the Right Vision Correction Surgery

There are many factors to consider when choosing a vision correction procedure. The best choice for you will depend on your prescription, your lifestyle, and the types of benefits you are seeking.

At Shinagawa, our advanced eye care team has the experience that is essential in finding the right procedure for you. Contact us with any questions or to schedule an appointment.
