Oral Prophylaxis
Oral Prophylaxis, or Teeth Cleaning as we know it, is a type of oral care which involves the cleaning of teeth to prevent tooth decay, gum disease, and other dental problems. It is also effective in the removal of food debris, teeth stains, and dental plaque.
It is necessary to promote proper oral health care. It is a cleaning procedure performed to our teeth for thorough cleaning with the expert eye of a dentist and specialized dental equipment. It is very true that most of us don’t pay attention to having our teeth cleaned and will not see a dentist as long as we don’t feel any pain and discomfort inside our mouth.
The dental procedure is performed by a dentist who cleans the surface of the teeth and the area below the gums through scaling and polishing. Scaling gets rid of accumulated calcular deposits (tartar) and stubborn teeth stains which can’t be removed by simple brushing. A rotating electric toothbrush and special toothpaste is used in polishing the teeth. Remember that Oral Prophylaxis is not a substitute for oral hygiene although it is an important part of it; you still need to brush your teeth and floss regularly.
