Common Eye Conditions & Their Effects To Your Eyesight

Your blurry vision may have been caused by one of the most common eye conditions. Blurred vision or loss of vision can be caused by any condition.

Many people wrongly assume blurred vision is a result of age (and it can be), and avoid getting their eyes checked or seeking treatment. Many common eye conditions leading to poor vision, such as cataracts, can be treated and vision can be restored when the condition is diagnosed early.

If you experience blurred vision or vision loss, it may be due to any of these common eye conditions:

Refractive Errors

The most common eye conditions resulting in poor vision and a need for vision correction are refractive errors. Nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism are all types of refractive errors.

Astigmatism is a common refractive error wherein the cornea and lens of the eye are unevenly curved. An equally curved eye will properly refract light, allowing clear vision, but an irregular shaped cornea or lens can affect vision.

Due to the irregular shape of the eye caused by Astigmatism, the eye’s ability to focus is inhibited. So, images may appear distorted or blurred.

Symptoms of astigmatism include blurry vision, eye-straining, headaches and squinting to see clearly. Mild to moderate astigmatism is most commonly treated with eyeglasses or contact lenses. In some more serious cases, LASIK eye surgery can treat astigmatism by reshaping the cornea. Reshaping of the cornea will improve how the eye focuses light rays on the retina.

Myopia (nearsightedness) is the most common refractive error of the eye. It occurs when the eyeball is too long relative to the focusing power of the cornea and lens of the eye, or the cornea and/or lens is too curved for the length of the eyeball, or a combination of both factors. As a result, the cornea and lens bend incoming light rays so they come into focus in front of the retina instead of directly on the retina. A person with myopia can clearly see close-up tasks, like reading and using a computer but has difficulty seeing distant objects clearly.

Hyperopia (farsightedness) occurs when the eyeball is too short, which prevents incoming light from focusing directly on the retina. The cornea and lens bend incoming light rays so they come into focus behind the retina rather than on it. Hyperopic eyes can see objects clearly from a distance but near objects appear blurry.

LASIK surgery is excellent in terms of correcting refractive errors as it effectively changes the shape of the cornea so that the eye will properly refract light into a point of focus on the retina.

Presbyopia

Presbyopia is a common type of vision disorder that occurs as you age. It is often referred to as the aging eye condition. Presbyopia results in the inability to focus up close, a problem associated with refraction in the eye.

It is due to hardening of the lens of the eye causing the eye to focus light behind rather than on the retina when looking at close objects.

Cataracts

A cataract is the clouding over of the focusing lens of the eye, which is located behind the pupil. Symptoms of cataracts include: blurred vision; difficulty seeing street signs, curbs, freeway exits and traffic lights; seeing halos or glare around lights; difficulty seeing TV, movies or faces; difficulty reading and more.

Cataracts can be treated with cataract surgery. To restore vision that has been lost or impaired by a cataract, the cloudy lens must be removed and a clear plastic implant lens replaces the cloudy lens.

Never Too Late: Marlo Mortel’s Easier Life After LASIK

It’s never too late.

That’s what ABS-CBN actor/host/singer Marlo Mortel recently learned after he had his LASIK at Shinagawa.

After dealing with a blurry vision and the inconvenience of eyeglasses for the longest time, Marlo felt that it was time to end his agony and LASIK got the job done for him, making his life brighter and easier.

LASIK has changed my life already. I can’t describe how happy and grateful I am. I now wake up with a 20/12 vision! Thank you, Shinagawa!” expressed Marlo.

Most of Marlo’s problems went away in under 10 minutes. No more difficulties in terms of his eyes and vision.

“No more hassle in reading my spiels. I can finally see the crowd clearer now whenever I perform, plus, I now enjoy watching at an IMAX theater. Before, I usually need to wear the 3D eyewear on top of my prescription glasses. I’ve been wearing glasses since the 6th grade and it’s been a huge hassle for me all my life! Now, I don’t need my glasses anymore when I’m about to drive or watch TV.”

In a snap, all of those mentioned challenges went away.

“Now, all of that and many more problems are gone because of a painless 10-minute LASIK procedure.”

Amazed with the result that LASIK delivered, Marlo asked himself why he didn’t do it sooner.

“Why haven’t I thought of this before? The LASIK procedure didn’t even take 10 minutes!”

Dr. Charo Rayos del Sol with a Patient | Shinagawa Feature Story

From Doctor To Patient: Dr. Charo’s Own LASIK Experience

Even ophthalmologists themselves need the sharpest of visions to be as prolific as possible.

Take it from Shinagawa’s very own Dr. Charo Rayos del Sol.

Our own doctor recently had her own LASIK to enhance his vision further.

“Of course, being an ophthalmologist myself, I need to have a sharp vision that can help me further in my profession,” expressed Dr. Charo. “That’s why I had LASIK here in our very own clinic here at Shinagawa to improve my eyesight and it was so smooth and very comfortable.”

“I’ve been struggling with blurry vision for over 10 years before having LASIK. I was at 20/200 before and now, I have a 20/15 vision.”

Used to performing surgeries herself as an eye doctor, it felt weird at first for her to be the patient who will undergo LASIK but in the end, it was all a thrill for her.

“It was weird at first to be the patient for LASIK as I am a doctor and normally, it’s me who performs the procedure. I’m glad it all went well as I was in good hands with our doctors and advanced machines here.”

While there’s a common misconception that in the medical industry, ophthalmologists do not actually undergo LASIK procedures themselves, her experience was a testament that doctors also have their full trust in the safety and advancements of the machines and practices at Shinagawa.

Armed with a brighter vision now, Dr. Charo expects herself to perform at an even higher level now regarding her duties as an ophthalmologist.

“I now have better eyesight and this will make everything easier for me, including the LASIK and cataract surgeries that I regularly perform.”

Protecting Your Eyes From Air Pollution | Shinagawa LASIK Blog

Protecting Your Eyes From Air Pollution

In our previous entry, it was discussed how air pollution can significantly affect your eyes and vision for the worse.

With that, it is quite important to protect your eyes from air pollution.

Here are some simple, yet effective ways to protect your eyes from the bad effect that air pollution brings:

1. Don’t Forget Your Sunglasses – Yes, it’s more than just an accessory. Wearing sunglasses is essential as that protects your eyes from the unforgiving rays of the sun and all the pollution out there. Every time you’re outdoors, wearing sunglasses enables you to protect your eyes from dust, debris or any harmful particles present in the air.

2. Hydrate Well – Dehydration should be a no-no. The easiest way to protect your eyes from air pollution is by staying hydrated. Drink at least eight glasses of water. It is essential to keep your body hydrated if you want your eyes to produce an adequate amount of tears.

3. Eat Foods Helpful For The Eyes – The effect of proper nutrition on health is sometimes underrated and it should not be. A daily intake of foods rich in fish oil, antioxidants, and foods omega-3s is a super effective prevention method.

4. Increase Indoor Humidity – Increasing the humidity levels indoor is an ideal way to protect your eyes. The air outside is dry but you can keep the air in your home moist. The humidity will not only keep your eyes moist but will also help in clearing your sinuses.

5. Stay Indoors In Times Of Pollution Level Peak – In cases wherein there is a high level of particulate matter in the air, limit your outdoor exposure as much as you can. Stay indoors. Even if you really have to go outside, protect your eyes with spectacles and/or masks.

Follow these tips and reminders and make sure your eyes are always well protected from the harmful air pollution.
