Causes and Symptoms of Eating Disorders

Are you the type of person who set extreme rules to follow a strict diet?

According to studies, during the pandemic, new cases of eating disorders rise because of limited access to food, social media, extreme stress, and life transitions, triggered by social influence, environment, genes, past trauma, and history of disordered eating behaviors and other mental issues.

Extreme dieting and following strict eating patterns causes diagnosed eating disorders such as anorexia (an abnormally low body weight an intense fear of gaining weight and a distorted perception of weight), bulimia (extreme overeating is followed by depression and self-induced vomiting, purging, or fasting), and binge eating (the consumption of large quantities of food in a short period of time).

Now, what happens to your body when you have an eating disorder is that it greatly affects your hormones causing irregular menstrual cycles, mood swings, infertility, and extreme stress. It can affect your energy, productivity, and performance. It changes your food and weight obsession such as controlled eating and regularly checking of weight. Lastly, it stresses your mental and emotional health which leads to low self-esteem.

Hence, if you have the following symptoms such as restricting yourself from something your body needs, quickly seek help for treatment, or if you know someone who experiences it help your loved ones or acquaintances to seek treatment.
