    The Pursuit of Happiness

We may not notice it, but our emotions and what we feel play a role in determining our health as much as our fitness, and our nutrition.

Commonly, we’d focus on our nutrition, our fitness, and sometimes our sleep habits, but there is also truth to saying that our emotional well-being holds a direct influence on our health.

Happiness is an emotion that we humans long and work towards. It is not just an emotion, but a big influence to achieving a positive state of mind. Overall, happiness is a sense of purpose and well-being that can affect both our physical and mental state.

Exploring what happiness can do for us can help strengthen our pursuit of it, so here’s how being happy can make us healthier:

    Happiness Combats Stress

Experiencing stress and anxiety in our daily lives is draining. This negative experience drains our energy, and our chances of being happy.

Stress, after all, causes our body to have increased levels of cortisol, a hormone that can cause disturbed sleep, weight gain, and high blood pressure. Studies show that people who are happy have lower cortisol levels, and thus less susceptible to the harmful effects that stress can have on their health. Even when faced with stress, happier people would produce lower levels of cortisol to that of an unhappy person experiencing stress.

Stress is almost inevitable, and happiness is something that we should use to help lessen the harmful effects that it can have on our health.

Happiness Leads to a Good Positive Mindset

Being happy and seeking happiness is critical to a person’s well-being. This is because happiness encourages positivity and optimism.

Facing obstacles, hardships, and challenging tasks can be met with a can-do attitude that can allow us to flourish.  This mindset would allow us to achieve our goals, and not be hindered by negative thoughts that would only hinder our progress.

Our mindset goes a long way, it affects our lifestyle, how we choose to live our lives. Anything from work, school, rest, fitness, nutrition, or anything, these are all affected by our mindset, and our happiness can only benefit and promote a healthy lifestyle.

Happiness can boost the Immune System

The immune system is an important system of our body that serves to keep us free from disease. While the role of happiness on the immune system may not be fully understood, there are studies that suggest that our emotional well-being holds some effect on the immune system.

Although it was discussed earlier that being happy would promote a healthy lifestyle that would benefit our overall health, there is also evidence that our emotions have an impact on the activity of our hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. The HPA serves to regulate the immune system, digestions, and stress levels. Happiness allows the HPA to operate without stress.

Just as much as our physical and mental well-being, our emotional well-being is an important aspect of our health. The strength to continue, to achieve our goals, and to preserve through difficulty is determined by our emotional well-being.

Pursue and choose to be happy, it goes a long way into our daily lives, and the life that we want and aspire to live. How we can find that happiness is not for me to tell you, but something for you to find, because only you can tell yourself how you can be happy.
