Shinagawa Dental Blog: Who Gets Cavities?

Who Gets Cavities?

Some people think and believe that only children are prone to getting cavities, also known as tooth decay. They are actually wrong.

Anyone with teeth can actually get cavities.

As you continue to age, changes in your mouth and teeth make cavities an adult problem as well. As you get older with time, your gums naturally pull away from your teeth. That can happen due to gum disease.

With that, the roots of your teeth get exposed to plaque. Plaque has the ability of clinging into your teeth. The acids in plaque then dissolve the enamel to create cavities.

Admit it or not, you most likely eat tons of high-carbohydrates and sugary foods. Unfortunately, that will more likely cause you to get cavities. That’s because bacteria in the mouth tend to thrive more on sugary and scratchy foods, producing more acids.

Some people are more prone to cavities than others. The reason for this is that some people tend to have more sugar intake than others, making themselves more vulnerable to cavities.

This means that as long as you constantly consume sugar, you’ll continue to leave yourself susceptible to cavities. However, if cut off on that sugar intake, you’ll very likely cut off on the cavities as well.

It really is hard to stave off sugar but if you know what’s good for your teeth, it’s probably time to contain your intake.

You can guard your teeth and prevent cavities by brushing at least twice a day with a reliable fluoride toothpaste, flossing daily, and of course, regularly visiting a dentist to ensure your oral wellness is well monitored and taken care of.

It is important to treat cavities right away as they may cause you more damage down the line.

If cavities are not treated accordingly in a timely manner, they are likely to get larger, forcing them to affect deeper layers of your teeth. That can lead to a severe toothache, infection and worse, tooth loss.

A dentist can help prevent and treat cavities with fluoride treatments and can find them by taking X-rays of your teeth. Have a consultation for FREE. Just call our Patient Care Lines: (+632) 368 5238 | (+63) 917 862 7454 | (+63) 921 217 0517 to book an appointment.
