How to Stop Binge Eating at Night

Trouble sleeping at night? It might be caused by your night time eating.

It is challenging to avoid and control eating late at night, especially when eating out late has become a habit or is done out of boredom.

Although, any food eaten during the night is most likely to be stored as fat rather than energy, especially if the food contains more carbohydrates.

One of the major causes of nighttime eating is boredom, hunger, binge eating disorder, and nighttime eating syndrome. However, it’s on a case-to-case basis which is why giving attention and importance to it will help identify the cause to eliminate problems such as future health risks.

People use food as an outlet to release their emotions such as sadness, anger, or frustration and they often eat even when they are not hungry. Binge eaters also tend to eat a massive amount of food in one sitting and feel out of control while they are eating.

According to a study published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, eating late at night can disrupt sugar levels and may contribute to weight gain due to burning fewer calories before bedtime.

Among the reasons that stand out the most as to why people are eating at night is that they don’t follow a routine such as time for eating and sleeping which leads to skipping meals. Therefore, a few tips that you can do to prevent this from happening is by planning your meals and snacks to help manage your food intake.

Eating quality meals that consist of vegetables, fruits, healthy fats, and healthy sources of protein can ensure unnecessary cravings throughout the day. In addition, a healthy meal helps you prevent and avoid hunger pangs at night since it provides an equal amount of nutrients in your body. In addition to that, seeking professional help and creating an emotional support network will help you find ways to manage negative emotions to overcome problematic eating at night.
