    A Good Night’s Rest

    What’s as important as eating a balanced diet and consistent exercise in achieving a healthier lifestyle?

    Sleeping.

    It has become a common practice nowadays to bypass the lack of energy through caffeinated products such as coffee, espressos shots, or energy drinks. Getting through the day with caffeine and sugary boosts can give us that lift of energy, but that isn’t exactly healthy.

    School, work, or our hobbies take up our time, and we end up losing time to get a proper good night’s rest, and we end up depending on those boosts to get us through the day. 

    While sleeping may be seen as unproductive or be associated with laziness, sleep is an essential function that benefits the body and mind, giving them more energy to make us feel refreshed and ready when we wake up.  

    Aside from helping us recover from physical and mental exhaustion, the state of sleep also benefits our health as it:

    • Strengthens the Heart – With proper sleep, we enable our heart to rest, along with the rest of the body. This prevents the release of a hormone that would force the heart to work harder.
    • Prevents Weight Gain – The more we sleep, the less we are likely to be hungry. When we don’t get enough sleep, the body produces ghrelin, and loses leptin. Ghrelin is a hormone that increases appetite, while leptin helps the body know that we are full.
    • Boosts the Immune System – Proper sleep allows the cells of the body to rest but it does not mean they are doing nothing. They are recovering. While not being fully strained, they get to become stronger, thus having the ability to prevent diseases that may come our way.

    For most adults, most studies would point that we would need at least 7 to 9 hours of sleep every day to ensure that our body and its systems function properly. Good rest helps us perform optimally for the day, and protects our overall health.

    While working out or planning healthy meals surely improves your wellness, proper rest also plays a big role in your overall health. So consider getting some good rest in addition to your balanced meals and exercise routines. You can even aid you sleep through different factors that allow your mind to relax.

    Where we sleep is important, and the best place to rest is the bed. Avoiding digital screens can affect our quality of sleep. The lighting, noise, and temperature also play a role in the environment we sleep in, so make sure you have a comfortable place to be able to rest.

    The lifestyle that we live can also affect our sleep. Eating heavy meals, or snacks laced with sugar can result in being uncomfortable as we try sleep. Caffeinated drinks such as coffee and tea can do the same and even go far as preventing us from sleeping. Alcoholic beverages may help you sleep but it would also reduce its quality. Avoiding these things and performing exercise during the day can aid us in getting a good night’s rest.
