What Does Your Skin Demand Every Day?

During the hustle and bustle of your hectic daily routines, it’s easy to skip that glass of water or to skip cleaning. Over time, though, those bad habits can take a toll on your skin.

Each day, you should be sure to provide your skin with:

  • Plenty of water
  • Thorough cleansing, twice a day. At night, make sure you remove all your make-up and cleanse properly before going to bed.
  • Balanced nutrition
  • Moisturizing. This is a necessary step even for those who have oily skin. There are plenty of moisturizers on the market that are oil-free.
  • Sun protection, sun protection, sun protection. It is absolutely crucial to protect your skin from harmful UVA and UVB light rays. Sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) is recommended every day. This will help prevent sun damage, skin cancers, and wrinkles.

Over the course of your life, you should pay attention to all parts of your skin.

Familiarize yourself with it so that you’ll notice any changes that might occur, such as different moles or patches that might need further attention.

If you feel like you need some help when it comes to skincare, we’ll be more than happy to provide that for you.

Signs You Need To Know About Aging Skin | Shinagawa Blog

Signs You Need To Know About Aging Skin

Understand the signs that you should read when it comes to aging skin.

If life is about change, skin is one of the best proofs. How your skin ages depend on factors like your lifestyle, diet, heredity, and personal habits.

What are the visible signs of aging skin?

Skin visibly changes in several ways as we age and a lot of it has to do with things beyond your control.

As we age, skin becomes:

  • Rough, dry, and itchy.
  • Slack. The loss of the elastic tissue (elastin and collagen) in the skin with age causes your skin to become slack and hang loosely.
  • Transparent. This is caused by thinning of the epidermis (surface layer of the skin) and dermis (deeper layer of the skin).
  • Fragile. Increased skin fragility is caused by flattening of the area where the epidermis and dermis (layer of skin under the epidermis) come together.
  • More easily bruised. This is caused by thinner blood vessel walls.
  • More prone to developing skin lesions, such as non-cancerous (benign) tumors.

If you’re noticing some signs of aging skin, you can have it checked so it can be taken care of. We can help you and your skin age gracefully.

Most Common Mistakes In Washing Your Face

The most common mistakes when it comes to washing your face can make or break your skincare routine and sabotage your complexion.

Your daily skincare starts with cleansing and cleansing correctly for your unique facial skin can make a huge difference that’s easy to notice.

Are you washing your face the right way?

Your complexion is not the same as everyone else’s. That’s because your complexion is the result of your unique choices and characteristics including where you live, what you do during your day, the products you use on your skin, your unique skin problems, and how oily or dry your skin is.

All these factors determine how you, and only you, should wash your face.

The most common mistakes people make when it comes to their face washing routines are:

  • Picking the wrong cleanser for their skin type
  • Using the wrong water temperature
  • Not washing product, dirt, and oil off twice a day
  • Using cleansers with unnecessary allergens and irritants
  • Forgetting to exfoliate

If you happen to be clueless about the proper skincare routine for you, that’s where we can help.

Random Facts About Skincare That You Should Know | Shinagawa Blog

Random Facts About Skincare That You Should Know

With so much true and false information about skincare available, it can be hard to keep any of it straight. To help you sort through the information, we want to help you understand some important facts related to skincare.

These skin facts will help you feel confident in your own skin care routine and/or treatment.

Dry skin is not prevented or treated by drinking water. If drinking water hydrated your skin from the inside out then taking a bath would quench your thirst from the outside in. Skin doesn’t work that way because it is a strong barrier. Dry skin is dry because the outer dead skin cell layer is damaged and can’t hold water.

What are the main causes of dry skin?

  • Damage to skin barrier lipids due to harsh soaps or contacts with solvents that strip lipids.
  • Excessive water loss from exposure to cold and harsh weather and dehumidified air.
  • Aging changes to skin structure that weaken the skin barrier.
  • Genetically inherited weakness in skin barrier such as atopic dermatitis type of eczema.

Acne is not caused by dirty skin.

Acne is the result of:

  • Changes in, and overproduction of, oil,
  • Clogging of pores,
  • Bacterial or yeast action, and
  • Inflammation.

Oil causes dead skin cells to stick together rather than slough out of the pores as they should. Washing your face often does not prevent this from happening and may actually aggravate your complexion by drying out your skin. Over-washing or scrubbing the skin too hard can irritate the skin and create openings for bacteria to infect acne, making it worse.

Sun damage can be caused even when you’re indoors
Being indoors does NOT protect you from the sun. UV rays come in two forms: UVA and UVB. UVB is blocked by windows, but UVA is not. UVA is the most important contributor to wrinkles, and UVB (and to a lesser degree UVA) is the most important contributor to skin cancer.

Protect yourself by wearing sunscreen even when indoors! Apply it every morning as you prepare for your day.

Blackheads are black because of oxidation, not dirt
Blackheads are also known as “open comedones.” Whiteheads, conversely are called “closed comedones." Both are caused by pores getting clogged with dead skin and sebum (oil). Blackheads appear black because the melanin pigment in the plug gets oxidized by oxygen (a chemical reaction) and the result is a dark color. Blackheads are not black because they are plugged with dirt!

Whiteheads are slightly deeper and often covered by a layer of skin so they do not have the same chance to get oxidized.

Impact Of Vitamin C In Skincare | Shinagawa Blog

Impact Of Vitamin C In Skincare

Vitamin C is the most common antioxidant in the skin. Unfortunately, humans do not have the enzyme (L-gluconogamma lactone oxidase) to make vitamin C, therefore it must be obtained from external sources.

L ascorbic acid is the active form of vitamin C that carries out the biological effects. Besides retinoids, vitamin C is probably the next most studied ingredient in skincare.

Ascorbic acid has many benefits.

Repeat studies have shown it helps to prevent photodamage from UVA and UVB radiation. It stimulates collagen production, serving as a co-factor for enzymes in collagen production. Lastly, vitamin C is a great lightening ingredient. It blocks tyrosinase, the key enzyme in melanin production.

However, vitamin C is highly unstable. It easily oxidizes in light, heat, pH change, and the presence of other ions. This has led to the development of various vitamin C derivatives that are more stable while trying to retain efficacy. However, formulation continues to be a challenge. Demonstrating ingredient effectiveness needs to occur not just in the laboratory setting or on animals, it also needs assessment on human skin.

Unfortunately, there’s a paucity of data regarding skincare ingredients in general (compared to medical dermatology), and some publications are conflicting. One study may show the benefit of a derivative, while another demonstrates no efficacy. This inherently speaks to the challenges of manufacturing L ascorbic acid, as the formulation is everything.

While the impact of Vitamin C on our skin is more or less unpredictable, your skin can benefit from proper care and treatments.

Shinagawa Aesthetics can enhance your skin’s health and bring out its best glow.
