The Link Between Healthy Skin and Air Travel

The Link Between Healthy Skin & Air Travel

With everything back in full circle, air travel is at an all-time high once again. And if you are one of the lucky ones who will be spending time in the air over the next few weeks or months, you’ll inevitably experience the issues that come from being at 35,000 feet.

While traveling by air, your body loses roughly one cup of water per hour that you spend in the sky. Pair that with the fact that an airplane’s cabin is less than 20 percent humidity (compared to an average home that is at least 30 percent humidity or higher), and you can quickly see why your skin tends to dry out a lot faster when you’re flying.

To help you combat the dry air you’ll face on airplanes, we’re sharing some useful tips to keep your skin looking picture-perfect!

Hydrate

Drink as much water as you can. As we mentioned previously, your body loses more water when you’re on an airplane and there is less humidity in the cabin. Drinking water when you’re traveling is essential both for the health of your skin and your body. Avoid the temptation of drinking coffee, alcohol or soda on your flight and opt for water or herbal tea instead. Pro Tip: You can get a refill on your water, all you have to do is ask!

Clean

Take a break mid-flight to clean your face with a gentle cleanser or cleansing wipes. This will help remove any dirt or dead skin cells that may have built up while you’ve been traveling and will give your skin a much-needed refresh before you land. If possible, consider applying some oil or moisturizer afterward to help lock in moisture. Which brings us to our next tip…

Moisturize

If there’s one thing you can do to help keep your skin looking and feeling its best while you travel, it’s moisturizing. Don’t fall into the trap of using hydrating sprays or water-based products when you’re traveling. When the air is dry — like it is on an airplane — it looks for water wherever it can. Which means, the air will soak up any water you may have on your skin. The best type of moisturizing products are ones that are oil or cream-based, as these will lock moisture in. For longer flights, considering using a moisturizing mask mid-flight to give your skin a hydration boost.

Tone

Using toner before or during your flight will help your skin maintain evenly balanced moisture levels. Skin is naturally acidic, typically with a pH balance of between five and six on a scale of 0 to 14. When the pH balance of our skin gets out of whack because of the alkaline nature of soap, toner can help restore balance, keeping oily skin from getting too greasy and keeping dry skin retain moisture.

However you choose to fly, we hope you remember to take care of your skin health by following these helpful tips and making sure to balance those sometimes uncontrolled food intake every now and then. And, as always, scheduling a much needed annual dermatology check-up with our skin experts!

Men and Women: Seeing Eye to Eye

Men and Women: Seeing Eye to Eye

Men and women don’t always see eye to eye.

There are many differences between men and women — even when it comes to vision and eye health.

Men, for example, are more likely to experience sight-threatening eye injuries than women, whereas women tend to be more vulnerable to certain eye diseases. So what can men and women do to address their different eye health concerns?

How Eye Diseases Affect Women

Glaucoma (a group of conditions that cause permanent vision loss through damage to the optic nerve) and age-related macular degeneration (the slow deterioration of central vision) are much bigger problems for women than men. Why are women more vulnerable? Because they have longer life expectancies. The longer we live, the more likely we are to develop vision problems. The best weapon against sight-threatening conditions is early detection.

Other eye problems women are more vulnerable to are chronic dry eye and basic refractive errors (the ones we correct with glasses or contact lenses).

Risk Factors for Eye Disease

Age isn’t the only risk factor that can make women vulnerable to eye diseases. Others include the major changes in hormones that come with pregnancy, menopause, and birth control use. Hormone changes can also lead to dry eye.

One overlooked factor is neglect. Many women tend to prioritize their family’s health needs over their own. So our message to all the busy moms out there is this: don’t forget to schedule your own eye appointments when you’re scheduling them for your kids!

Men’s Eyes Can Fall Victim to Hormones Too

Men don’t go through as many dramatic changes in hormone levels as women, but during puberty, boys can sometimes become temporarily nearsighted as their eyes grow along with the rest of them, and that effect doesn’t go away in every case. Luckily, this is a problem we can easily correct with glasses.

Men’s Risk of Eye Injuries

The reason men are more likely to experience eye injuries than women is that they more often work in dangerous jobs and play dangerous sports. Compounding this risk is that they are generally less willing than women to wear protective gear — while being more willing to try to “tough it out” after an injury. Medieval knights wore full suits of armor; it’s not unmanly to wear eye protection! Please see an eye doctor if you suspect a problem with your eyes.

What About Differences in Vision Between the Sexes?

Yes, men and women literally see the world differently. Women are better at distinguishing subtle differences in color (while men are sixteen times more likely to be colorblind than women). Men, on the other hand, are better at tracking motion. If you’ve ever argued over paint swatches with your significant other, you might be able to blame biology!

We Look Forward to Seeing You

We urge our female patients to make their personal eye health needs a priority and we encourage our male patients to overcome the temptation to tough an eye injury instead of seeking treatment.

Early treatment is crucial, as is early detection of sight-threatening conditions. Whether you’re due for a prescription update or it’s simply time for your next regular exam, we’re excited to see you!

How Healthy is Your Skin?

How Healthy is Your Skin?

While the products you use or the specific routine you have may vary based on your skin type, these are all skincare tips that everyone should at least consider adopting into their daily routine.

Clean

The first thing you should do is build a solid cleaning routine in the morning when you wake up and before you go to bed at night. This routine should include cleansing, exfoliating and moisturizing your skin. To find the right products for you, consult with a board-certified dermatologist first.

Additionally, you should wash your face before you work out. When you sweat, your pores open up and are more susceptible to filling up with dirt and germs, which in turn can cause pimples and blemishes to form. By washing your face before you hit the gym, you’ll keep potential acne to a minimum.

Hydrate

All dermatologists and doctors agree: water is critical to your health. Staying hydrated can also help prevent your skin from drying out during the colder months and keep wrinkles at bay, so your skin appears firmer.

And while hydrating from the inside out is ideal, you should also add in some additional hydration with a daily moisturizer. This will add an extra layer of protection to your skin, help lock in moisture and give your skin a nice, healthy glow.

Protect

One of the biggest contributors to unhealthy skin is harmful UV rays. Not only have UV rays been shown to cause premature wrinkles, but they also have been linked to the development of melanoma and other skin cancers. What can you do to keep harmful UV rays from damaging your skin? Wear sunscreen year-round.

While sunscreen is important to wear during the summertime, it is recommended that you wear sunscreen all year long, as you can still get sun damage during the colder or cloudier months. Also, if you are outside for a long time, make sure to cover up, seek the shade and wear the right sunscreen.

For those of us who spend most of our days in front of a computer screen, protecting our skin from the damage that blue light emits is a must. Add in some topical antioxidants to help add a level of protection and invest in some blue light shields for your devices.

Sleep

A good night’s sleep can make all the difference when it comes to your overall health, as well as the health of your skin. If you don’t get enough sleep, it can affect your mood, your metabolism and it can cause your skin to appear tired and unhealthy.

Try to get at least seven hours of sleep every night. And if that’s not possible, try to add in some downtime for yourself throughout the day, where you take 10 minutes to just sit and unplug. Give yourself a daily break and allow your mind to slow down. The more rest you are able to get every day, the more you will begin to see a difference in the health of your mind, body and skin.

It can be easy to trade in your normal skincare routine for one that may not be best for you. Try to adopt some of the healthy habits featured, and if you have any questions, schedule an appointment with one of our dermatologists at Shinagawa Aesthetics for a one-on-one consultation. They will be able to help you determine what skincare products and routines are right for you and your skin.
