The Difference Between Dry And Oily Acne | Shinagawa Aesthetics Blog

The Difference Between Dry And Oily-Acne

For a lot of people, acne is one of the most common and difficult skin conditions to be treated. Even dermatologists and aestheticians admit to being challenged in terms of treating acne problems of a number of their patients.

When you break out, those nasty and annoying blemishes are a combination of dead skin cells, bacteria, and oil. Those with oily skin have excess oil on the surface, making it the perfect breeding ground for breakouts. Yet, surprisingly, even people with dry skin can get acne.

So, what is the difference between oily acne and dry acne and what is causing that to happen?

As we know, oily skin is more susceptible to acne because of all of the excess oil that sits on top of the skin. The acne flame is fueled by oil, meaning that if you don’t use products that help reduce excess oil, acne will be more difficult to prevent and treat.

Both salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide are effective in the treatment of acne. Salicylic acid exfoliates and works like a mop to absorb excess oil and remove the dead skin cells that cover the breakouts. This makes the extraction process much easier and more comfortable for clients. It also has antibacterial properties which are essential to treating and controlling acne.

On the other hand, benzoyl peroxide works by forcing oxygen into the pores and killing bacteria. Bacteria cannot survive in the presence of oxygen – therefore making benzoyl peroxide the perfect ingredient for killing that bacteria and reducing breakouts on the skin.

But having dry skin and acne can be a very frustrating situation to deal with too.

The main ingredients that are used to treat acne can be very drying for any client, but especially for those who already struggle with dry skin. When the skin is dry, the barrier function is not working properly and allows for transepidermal water loss. This makes the skin even drier and can allow bacteria to spread, causing more breakouts. It is important to rebalance the skin with the appropriate oils and lipids to ensure a healthy barrier, especially for clients with dry skin.

Most of the time, clients actually create the problem by stripping their skin, which leads to dryness and an intact barrier. This can happen by simply overdoing their skincare routine.

Having both a gentle cleanser, as well as one that has active ingredients, is important so you are not over drying the skin. Clients can also over exfoliate with the use of abrasive facial scrubs or even over using a facial brush like the Clarisonic. You really only need to be exfoliating the skin two-to-three times a week.

When you exfoliate, the naturally occurring lipids or oils on the skin are being taken off; when it’s overdone, the face will overcompensate and produce more oil.

In short, acne is a frustrating skin condition to deal with, whether clients have dry or oily skin.

Make sure that they are always using their recommended products and that they are using them regularly. They will get the best results with a routine. Remember, less is more when using professional skin care products and treatments.

Surprising Health Benefits Of Exercising | Shinagawa Aesthetics Blog

Surprising Health Benefits Of Exercising

Aside from better stamina, cardio and body shape, regularly exercising presents more overall benefits that you may know.

In fact, exercising can actually do a lot of wonders for your skin.

According to various studies, here are some amazing benefits that exercising can give you and your body:

  1. Improves Acne – Since regular exercise helps regulate blood sugar, it helps reduce inflammation which can improve acne. It also reduces the stress hormone, cortisol, which is an acne trigger.
  2. Reduces Risk of Skin Cancer – Based on studies, regular exercise lowers your risk for skin cancer, including life-threatening melanoma.
  3. Reduces Heartburn – Regular exercise, especially less stressful aerobic types like swimming and walking, reduce the severity of acid reflux or heartburn. And reducing heartburn can also help you sleep better.
  4. Improves Chronic Pain – Losing weight is critical to improving chronic pain since the more weight you carry, the more pressure and pain to your joints and bones you’ll experience. Exercise also reduces pain because it reduces inflammation and your weight, of course.
  5. Reduces Risk of Alzheimer’s Disease – A study showed that daily exercise significantly reduces the risk for Alzheimer’s, even if —get this— you start exercising after the age of 80.
  6. Better Sleep – Regular exercise helps you sleep better, provided it’s not done within 2 to 3 hours of bedtime. Exercise can also reduce and sometimes eliminate sleep apnea, a frustrating and potentially health-threatening sleep disorder that causes disruptions in breathing.
  7. More Energy – Many studies show that exercise, even just a few times a week, boosts energy. And morning exercisers reap the biggest benefit.
  8. More Happiness – If you’ve heard of “runner’s high,” then you know that exercise makes people happy. That’s because exercise boosts mood-enhancing or feel-good endorphins.
  9. Reduces Risk of Psoriasis – A study showed that vigorous aerobic exercise and calisthenics are associated with a reduced risk of psoriasis, a chronic inflammatory skin condition.

As you can see, working out constantly presents a lot of health benefits for your skin. You should probably start hitting the gym.

Night Time Skin Care Routine | Shinagawa Aesthetics Blog

The 1, 2, 3’s and A, B, C’s of Skin Care Routine, Part 2: Nighttime

Your Nighttime Regimen

The skin naturally repairs itself during night time. Your nighttime skin routine should be all about treatment and regeneration. If your skin is dull-looking, exfoliate. If it’s irritating, hydrate and protects. Nighttime skin regimen requires the same commitment as your Daytime routine. Without further ado, here’s the Nighttime Skin Care routine

Step 1: (Double) Cleanser
After a day of going through a lot, it must have accumulated grime, dirt, oil, and makeup. Make sure to use a makeup remover such as cleansing oils before washing your face with your gentle cleanser. This strips off the makeup, sebum, and dirt to prep your skin and absorbs the skin products meant for repair. It is also best to use a soap-free cleanser first then wipe of cotton pads then use your regular facial to lather.

Step 2: Toners, Essences, and Boosters
Apply toner as what you normally would in the morning. At night, some go for various types of skin care boosters. These boosters can come on different forms like mists, essences, beauty waters or hydrating (hyaluronic acid) serums. These are water-like or almost lightweight. Applying them after washing that substitutes as your toner. If you are using a toner an essence, the rule of thinnest to thickest applies.

Remember: Cleanser only clean the surface, toners are needed for deeper cleansing and for fat deposits.

Step 3: Eye Cream
Aside from targeting crow’s feet and dark circles, eye creams can also serve to protect your delicate eye area from your other skin care products.

Step 4: Treatment Serums, Creams, and Pads
As we sleep, the skin does the bulking for the 3R’s. Repair, Restore and Regenerate. Hence, most targeted skin care treatments that contain retinoid and anti-aging serums are better used at night.
Instead of layering up all your treatment serums and creams, just choose your evening treatment depending on the needs of your skin’s of-the-moment needs. There would be nights where you would just be wash-moisturize-bed routine.

Here are things to consider:

  • Just choose between prescription meds OR exfoliating treatments (like AHA/BHA). Using them both on the same night is a big No-No. It has high risks of irritating your skin.
  • Do not use retinol creams with exfoliating treatments.
  • Exfoliative treatments: Use it sparingly. One to three times a week.
  • Detoxifying/Clay Masks: once a week is enough.

Step 5: Hydrating Mask or Face Oil
Dry skin? You may want to add a hydrating cream mask or face oil. Both product types are generally mild and can be typically used as often as your skin needs an extra boost of hydration.

Step 6: Moisturizers or Night Cream

Most nighttime moisturizers or creams are thicker and heavier than your daytime moisturizers. This is for the reason that to be absorbed over the course of several hours. Another reason why they are thicker is that they create a protective layer to prevent water evaporation while you sleep. Maintaining high water content in the skin is key for healing.

Timing is everything! Aside from following the proper order in the application of the right products, it is also important to consider the time it takes for the skin to absorb the products. Keep it simple. We may not have the luxury of time to spend and who would want the bed to be kept waiting. Most of the products have to wait for 5 to 30 minutes before the next step to ensure proper absorption. Give ample time for the products to sink in your skin.
