Eye Diseases Caused By Smoking | Shinagawa Blog

Eye Diseases Caused By Smoking

As we all know, smoking cigarettes can lead to a lot of health problems.

However, do you know that smoking is a habit that can have a harmful impact on your eyes, too?

Cigarettes contain approximately 4,000 chemicals. In fact, some of these poisonous chemicals can lead to long-term cellular damage in the eye, increasing the risk of corneal infections and delaying healing time.

Here are the different diseases that have a higher chance of developing in smokers. Some of these diseases are so dangerous that they can lead to blindness.

Cataracts

Did you know that smoking daily may put you at an increased risk for cataracts? Cataracts are the clouding of the eye’s natural lens. When cataracts start to form, they can lead to blurry vision and—in worst-case scenarios—total blindness. Studies show that there is a strong link between smoking and the increased risk of age-related cataracts. As such, those who smoke cigarettes regularly are more likely to develop cataracts at an earlier age than those who are non-smokers.

Diabetic retinopathy

You are more likely to contract diabetes if you are frequently exposed to tobacco smoke. Diabetes can lead to an eye disorder known as diabetic retinopathy which is caused by the eye’s blood vessels becoming damaged. This can lead to many vision complications, including blindness.

Uveitis

Exposure to toxic chemicals, especially those found in cigarettes, can lead to uveitis, an inflammation of the eye. This can also affect the iris, the colored part of the eye. Smoking may put you at greater risk for developing this disorder, which can result in serious complications such as glaucoma and vision loss.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD)

If you’re a regular cigarette smoker, you’re three times more likely to develop the chronic disease known as age-related macular degeneration. Age-related macular degeneration (or AMD) causes the macula, the oval-shaped pigmented area near the center of the retina, to deteriorate and can result in vision loss. The macula allows for acute vision.

If you develop AMD, your central vision will be impaired. Because of this, you may not be able to participate in everyday tasks involving your eyesight like reading, writing, or driving.

With all of the existing information available, it’s important to be aware of the negative impact cigarettes can have on your health. Quitting smoking is just the first step toward decreasing your chance of developing harmful ocular diseases—and improving your overall health.

LASIK Makes Diving Easier For Chem Palarca

Being a diver isn’t easy when you have blurry vision. Chem Palarca attests to that.

“As a free-diver and multisport enthusiast, having a 450 myopic vision was definitely a challenge! Contact lenses are my go-to’s. There was always that fear that at any time if water would enter my mask or goggles it would affect my performance,” shared Chem.

She decided to make things easier for her by having LASIK.

“This year, with the lockdown and canceled races and dives, I decided to give myself something very special for my birthday… a LASIK surgery. Now, I have a 20/10 vision! I’m so ready and pumped up to train for my dives and races soon! Thank you, Shinagawa!”

LASIK A Revolutionary Way To Improve & Own Your Vision | Shinagawa Blog

LASIK: A Revolutionary Way To Improve & Own Your Vision

Unlike glasses or contacts, Laser Eye Surgery, LASIK in particular, is not a temporary fix but permanently adjusts your vision. Many patients achieve a higher visual acuity from LASIK than is possible with glasses or contacts.

  • LASIK offers sportsmen and women and anyone who is an active clear and limitation-free vision
  • LASIK is one of the safest elective procedures in the world
  • Over the long term, LASIK may be the cheapest form of vision correction

The main difference between glasses, contacts, and LASIK is that it doesn’t temporarily adjust your vision by adding an additional lens on top of the eye. Rather, it permanently changes it by eliminating the refractive errors.

The first major benefit of this is it frees you from having to wear glasses and contacts and, as a result, having to deal with all their drawbacks. Repairs, replacements, trips to the optometrist, risk of infection, dry eye, irritation, limits on exercise, stress — LASIK is the most convenient form of vision correction out there as once you’ve had it done, you can forget about it and get on with your life.

Virtually 100 percent of patients who receive the standard treatment of LASIK achieve 20/40 vision, and over 95 percent achieve 20/20 or better.

It’s not uncommon for patients to reach an even higher level of vision with LASIK. For example, 97 percent of short-sighted patients see 20/20 or better — which includes those who see 20/16.

LASIK is also an increasingly viable option for people with prescriptions that have struggled to find a suitable form of vision correction.

The versatility of the treatment also means it has, for the first time, afforded people an actual solution to getting rid of reading glasses.

On that note, having now been performed on over 35 million people, LASIK as a whole is a well-established treatment and considered by experts as one of the safest and most effective forms of elective surgery in the world. And even though it comes at a high upfront cost, over the long term it actually very often works out to be the same or cheaper than contacts or glasses. This is also backed up by patient satisfaction and quality of life, with LASIK patients reporting a significant improvement in the quality of life after surgery.

If you’re ready to have a better life with a brighter vision and minus the hassles of glasses and contacts, your LASIK screening and journey await you. Schedule your appointment with us now and let us change your life for the better!
